While gay people can be found throughout the city, the neighborhoods of Middle River Terrace, Poinsettia Heights and Lake Ridge lie just to the south of WiMa and have large gay populations.īoca Raton, Palm Beach and other cities to the north. It has a great gay beach (although most beaches are LGBT-friendly) and has a number of beach hotels that cater to the LGBT community. The city has been named the Number #1 gay vacation destination in the US. (Example rent: El Sol Condos on Dixie Highway: 1bed/bath $750/month - 2bed/1bath $950) So, neighborhoods closer to the beach or The Drive are the most in demand by gays. Some parts of the city are still transitioning. The cost of living is more reasonable than WiMa and most parts of the city are within a 10 minute drive to The Drive. This city lies just north of Wilton Manors and also has a large gay population.

Great latin music and dancing! While mainly a younger crowd of hispanics on the dance floor, "gringos" and others feel welcome to join in. I highly recommend The Manor's Saturday Latin night.

This is THE place where gay men, both young and old, come to party on the weekends. In the past, the majority of gay men who lived here were older (many, many bears) but in recent years, it has seen a lot of younger and more diverse gay men, especially latin men from the Caribbean and South America. It's also a very expensive area with many apartments costing well over $1k a month and homes costing $300k and up. It's quite common to see gay men walking their dogs in the neighborhood streets, holding hands and kissing at the local Starbucks and it has a very nice, small town feel but with a gay twist. While it's a small city of 12k, it has an area called "The Drive" which is about 10 blocks long and is the epicenter of gay bars, restaurants, etc. According to the Census and other polls, it has the highest concentration of gay people in the country. The area, like many of the more affluent parts of Miami, can be beyond the reach of some gay people's budgets. Miami Shores has a large LGBT population with a mix of White, Latin, and Black populations. Depending on the neighborhood, gay people may or may not be welcome or accepted openly. Miami itself is very diverse with people from many different countries and cultures throughout the city. Reports of homophobic attacks throughout SoBe and even reports of hostility by the SoBe police towards the gay community can be easily found using Google.

While SoBe still has some younger, more urban gay men, the majority of the gay community has moved out of the area. I have spoken with so many men and women who found it so freeing to be able to holds hands or hug their partners while out about town without the stares or nasty comments.ġ0-20 years ago, SoBe was THE place for gays to live and work in SoFlo.

Most gay people here feel very free to be open about being gay at work, at church, etc. Note: If you live in a rural or other area that is not accepting of LGBT people, I strongly urge you to consider moving to the cities and neighborhoods around Wilton Manors.
#Old gay bars fort lauderdale update#
I realize that this is a frequent topic but I thought I'd share with folks looking to move to South Florida (SoFlo) and provide an update for those folks (LGBT) looking to move here.
